POST-SURGICAL REHABILITATION

Rebuild function after surgery — step by step.

Recovery after orthopedic surgery is a progression. OnePoint helps patients restore motion, strength, confidence, and function while respecting healing timelines and the demands of the activities they want to return to.

COMMON POST-SURGICAL NEEDS

Rehabilitation for a wide range of orthopedic procedures.

Our clinicians regularly work with patients after orthopedic surgery. The exact plan depends on the procedure, surgeon guidance, healing stage, current function, and individual goals.

Knee

ACL & Knee Surgery

Progressive rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction and other knee procedures with a focus on restoring motion, strength, control, and return to activity.

Shoulder

Rotator Cuff & Shoulder Surgery

Rehabilitation designed around protection, range of motion, progressive strengthening, and return to functional or overhead activity.

Hip

Hip Surgery

Restore mobility, strength, walking tolerance, and functional capacity following orthopedic procedures involving the hip.

Joint Replacement

Knee & Hip Replacement

Progressive mobility, strength, balance, endurance, and functional training to support return to everyday activity.

Foot & Ankle

Foot & Ankle Procedures

Rebuild mobility, calf and lower-leg strength, balance, gait, and tolerance for walking, running, or sport as appropriate.

Other Orthopedic

Additional Procedures

Our team also treats patients after a variety of orthopedic surgeries involving the spine, elbow, wrist, hand, and other musculoskeletal structures.

THE RECOVERY PROCESS

Rehabilitation changes as healing and function improve.

Post-surgical recovery is not one continuous phase. Treatment evolves as restrictions change, strength returns, and the patient becomes ready for more demanding activity.

1

Protect & Restore

Early care may focus on swelling, pain, range of motion, muscle activation, walking, and understanding post-operative precautions.

2

Rebuild Basic Strength

Gradually improve strength, mobility, balance, and control as healing and surgical guidance allow.

3

Increase Load

Progress resistance, movement complexity, and endurance to restore capacity for work, daily life, and exercise.

4

Return to Activity

Reintroduce the specific movements and physical demands required for the patient’s goals.

5

Higher-Level Performance

For active patients and athletes, later-stage care may include running, jumping, power, agility, and sport-specific work.

6

Build Independence

Transition toward independent training with a clearer understanding of how to continue building strength and confidence.

WHAT TREATMENT MAY INCLUDE

More than simply waiting for healing.

Healing matters, but rehabilitation also needs to restore the physical capacity required for your life after surgery.

Range-of-motion work
Progressive strengthening
Walking & gait training
Balance & control
Manual therapy when appropriate
Blood flow restriction when appropriate
Objective strength testing
Return-to-activity progression
Strengthening during post-surgical rehabilitation
SURGEON GUIDANCE + CLINICAL PROGRESSION

Respect healing without losing sight of the end goal.

Post-operative precautions, weight-bearing restrictions, and protocol milestones can shape the early phases of rehabilitation. As recovery progresses, treatment should also respond to the patient’s actual strength, movement, function, and goals.

Our clinicians use surgeon guidance, healing timelines, clinical findings, and objective measures to help determine appropriate progression.

Progress is more than time since surgery

The calendar matters, but so do motion, strength, control, symptoms, confidence, and the ability to tolerate progressively greater physical demands.

OBJECTIVE TESTING & TECHNOLOGY

Use better information to guide progression.

When appropriate, objective testing and rehabilitation technology can help quantify strength deficits, monitor progress, and guide decisions about advancing activity.

Both Locations

Suji Blood Flow Restriction

BFR can support strengthening with lower external loads during selected stages of rehabilitation when clinically appropriate.

Virginia-Highland

Kinvent Force Testing

Force plates and dynamometry can help quantify strength and side-to-side differences as rehabilitation progresses.

Edgewood / Candler Park

VALD & AlterG

Objective performance testing and reduced-body-weight walking or running can support selected later-stage rehabilitation goals.

POST-SURGICAL CLINICIANS

Orthopedic therapists across both clinics.

Our orthopedic clinicians routinely treat patients after surgery and can help match rehabilitation progression to the patient’s procedure, goals, and level of activity.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Post-surgical rehabilitation questions

When should I start physical therapy after surgery?

The timing depends on the procedure and surgeon guidance. Some patients begin soon after surgery, while others have a period of protection first. Our intake team can help you schedule based on the plan provided by your surgeon.

Do I need to bring my surgeon’s protocol?

If your surgeon provided post-operative instructions or a rehabilitation protocol, bring it with you or make it available to the clinic so your therapist can incorporate it into the plan of care.

Can you help me return to sport after surgery?

Yes. For appropriate patients, later-stage rehabilitation can progress into running, jumping, cutting, strength, power, conditioning, and sport-specific preparation.

Which clinic should I choose?

Post-surgical rehabilitation is available at both OnePoint locations. Your preferred location, clinician fit, scheduling needs, and any testing technology that may be useful can help guide the choice.

Dry Needling During Rehabilitation

When appropriate for the stage of healing and plan of care, dry needling may be used to address pain, muscle-related symptoms, or mobility restrictions.
